Well it's here - pantone has again released its colour pick for the coming year. I must say I'm struggling a little not to put the words chicken tikka in front of this one, (I know, no r) but their top colour for the new year is Marsala. Not quite brown, not quite red. They are calling it wine-influenced, “Hardy, robust, satisfying, fulfilling. At the same time there’s a certain glamour that’s attached to this color,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.
Pantone like the idea of teaming this with blue, but we've got a few ideas of our own, so watch this space.
There's a reason peacock themed parties are so popular, the rich palette of jeweled colours, the glamour and opulence. Strut your tail feathers because this month on the blog it's peacock party time!

Another great way to incorporate the peacock theme into your wedding is with a very unique guest book idea. These beautiful fingerprint or signature peacock guest books come in four different styles. Available from i do it yourself.
Obviously the most environmentally friendly and ethical way to source any feather is to pick it up off the ground. Firstly, you'll need to clean and sanitise it, (something we'll look at in another post) but when you're talking about peacocks, just finding one lying around outside your house isn't very likely.
Male peacocks do naturally shed their beautiful tail feathers annually in the autumn, and ethical peacock feathers come from farms where feathers really have just been collected from the ground. Ask your supplier to source you cruelty free feathers, or if you are searching for them yourself a good tip is to look for feathers with their entire shaft intact. Large scale harvested feathers are often chopped or pulled right off the bird before it's ready to fall, so the end will be cut off to hide the damage. A naturally dropped feather tapers to a point with a tiny hole in the centre where the blood vessel used to be.
Ethically sourced peacock feathers may be harder to come by in huge quantities. Later this month we'll take a look at a few alternatives so you can save the humane ones for the really special details. If you have any tips to share on sourcing ethical feathers please do leave a comment.

TOP tip - ethically sourced peacock feathers
Peacock feathers can be incredibly beautiful and it's tempting to use them in just about everything, from a single feather sent out with your invitation and peacock accessories, to the bouquet, floral arrangements and table decorations. But how have the feathers been sourced, what happened to the peacock?
Obviously the most environmentally friendly and ethical way to source any feather is to pick it up off the ground. Firstly, you'll need to clean and sanitise it, (something we'll look at in another post) but when you're talking about peacocks, just finding one lying around outside your house isn't very likely.

For many couples, choosing where to get married is as important as the dress, the rings and the vows. Luckily for you, Australia is one of the most beautiful and diverse countries in the world. Whether you envision a small, secluded and intimate wedding, an extravagant beachside event or a simple elopement in a tropical paradise for your big day - you won’t be disappointed with the choice on offer. If you are looking for inspiration for an upcoming wedding, then here are Australia’s best wedding destinations.
Get Married Underwater
Where: Palm Beach, Carins
Australians love the idea of getting married by the ocean, but for an unforgettable and completely unique experience, why not consider getting married under the ocean? Charter a private boat for you and your guests from Palm Beach in Cairns and sail out into the ocean. Once you’ve said your vows underwater amongst the tropical fish, celebrate in style at a stunning beachfront restaurant, or sip chilled champagne on board with your guests. Underwater speaking and listening devices are provided and you even sign the all-important wedding documents underwater on waterproof paper! You and your guests may want to consider taking out domestic travel insurance for this underwater activity.
Relaxed Beachside Wedding
Where: Turquoise Bay in Western Australia or Wineglass Bay, Tasmania
Australia is renown for its stunning beaches. If your picture perfect wedding is one where you walk down a sandy aisle to the sound of the crashing waves, then you really are spoilt for choice. Having trouble deciding on the perfect beach for your wedding? Consider Turquoise bay in WA, an expansive and beautiful part for Australia with rugged coastline, white sandy beaches and crystal clear water teeming with tropical fish. This bay is one of the most romantic beaches in the country. Or how about the iconic destination of Wineglass Bay in Tasmania, a remote and stunning location where once you have said your vows, you can hike up to a breathtaking lookout point, ideal for totally unique wedding photos.
Say your Vows in a Lush Tropical Rainforest
Where: The Daintree Rainforest, Queensland
Located 120km south of Cairns, this World Heritage tropical rainforest is one of the oldest in the world. Say your vows against a lush tropical backdrop of beautiful ferns and fauna, surrounded by hidden waterfalls and amazing wildlife. There’s also plenty to keep you and your guests entertained before and after the ceremony. The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway spans 7.5km over the rainforest, so don’t forget to take your camera to capture some of the breath-taking views. As the gondolas descend into the rainforest, keep a look out for the kangaroos that live in trees – the Bennett’s Tree Kangaroo and Lumholtz’s Tree Kangaroo.
Visit: Tourism Port Douglas & Daintree
Get hitched in the Dessert
Where: Uluru, Northern Territory
One of Australia’s most unique and unusual destinations to get married in is in the remote wilderness of Uluru. Exchange your vows against spectacular outback scenery, watch stunning sunrises and sunsets with your guests, and sip champagne under the stars with your closest friends and family. Getting married in the desert is guaranteed to make your wedding a memorable and a once-in-a-lifetime experience for you and your guests. If your guests have travelled from far and wide, there are plenty of other activities to do before and after the wedding to keep them occupied: - Take a camel tour of Uluru and the surrounding aboriginal lands - Romantic hot air balloons at sunrise - Tour the nearby caves and canyons
Visit: Voyages for more information
If you are planning your own upcoming nuptials or are attending a wedding away from home, then don’t forget to take out domestic travel insurance for complete peace of mind.

Papel picado throw pillows, from $42 by Natalie Baca Studio 2 5. Hand painted Mexican pattern wedge wedding shoes $310, Norakaren 6. Day of the Dead silver bracelet $350 from Taylors Eclectic
Papel picado is a beautiful Mexican folk art tradition of cutting elaborate designs into colourful tissue paper, it basically means 'perforated paper'. Using a small hammer and chisel an artist can create as many as 50 banners at a time but there are plenty of ideas for a DIY bride armed with a pair of scissors.
You will need:
scissors (normal and decorative edged)
coloured tissue paper
string
sticky tape
an iron
Step 1. Cut your tissue paper into rectangles roughly the size of a normal sheet of paper (about 21 x 30cm)
Step 2. Fold the first piece of paper like an accordion four to size times
Step 3. Cut small shapes and patterns into the folded paper, its just like making a snow flake when you were a kid! Use some decorative edge scissors to cut along the ends of the folded paper to finish.
Step 4. Unfold your design and repeat with the rest of the tissue paper sheets.
Step 5. When you have cut out all your panels, smooth out the creases with a cool iron and stick each one to a long piece of string with a little sticky tape.
For very simple versions there is also a cute tutorial on Green Wedding Shoes.
And here is a great cheat version - just use rectangular doilies! Cut them in half, fold a little flap over the top of some string and fix with sticky tape.
For even more Mexican themed invitations check out our sugar skulls design, Until Death Do Us Part, and our cute little burro piñata invite, great for kids.

Bokeh. If you've ever wondered what that beautiful blurry light effect in photos is, its called bokeh. It's used to describe the out-of-focus areas of a picture and comes from the Japanese word meaning blur. There is a simple way to take your own romantic bokeh shots and all you need is a bit of black paper! Just cut a circle of card to cover your lens and make a hole in it the shape you want your little lights to be, like these cute little hearts. Check out this great step by step from Yellow Eleven Photography.• Theresas Thompson |
