Last March we predicted sexy was back, and by that we mean the back of the wedding dress was going to be a gorgeous focus with ornate designs and pretty details. This year most wedding professionals are predicting the same, and its set to be a continuing trend for 2014 wedding fashions. With the popularity of The Great Gatsby and Downtown Abbey still influencing many brides, 1920s fashion will big again. And with all that gorgeous lace and beading to play with we can understand why.

There are a few sweet predictions making the rounds at the moment, like the suspended wedding cake announced by The knot as a 2014 trend. Instead of the traditional cake display, sitting on a table, the idea is the cake floats in the air suspended in a creative way. Awe inspiring to be sure but perhaps out of reach for the budgets of most brides. And just how practicle is it? How do you cut it when it's swinging around? Naked cakes are also tipped to be a big thing this year. Naked basically means layers of cake with delicious filling and just a dusting of icing sugar. Now that's more like it.

Ombré is obviously still as popular as ever, whether it's the icing on the outside or a surprise of sponge on the inside.

Our trend predictions are for more delectable little mini cakes. A bit of an extension of the dessert bar that's been so popular the past few years, and a bit more glamorous than a cupcake.

Not to knock cupcakes though. Our other favourite trend to watch out for this year is the gorgeous cupcake bouquet. These stunning creations would be perfect as a table centerpiece, edible and beautiful, what's not to love?

We hope by now you are all well and truly recovered from your New Year's celebrations and ready to jump into 2014. We had such a busy 2013 in the 'i do' it yourself office with some big renovation and design projects and most importantly a new family member - in late November we welcomed a little boy into the world, and he's certainly keeping us busy.
Before we get into new ideas, we thought it would be fun to look back at the different themes and inspiration we covered in the past year.

Pantone might have picked radiant orchid but the i do it yourself blog readers have gone for aqua turquoise as their colour of choice for this year. Purple came a very close second while poor old brown wins the wooden spoon for coming in last.
